The old rule of thumb was that you took your total budget and spent 1/3 on the rifle and 2/3 on the scope/rings/mount.

Times have changed and even Leupold has reasonable offerings at the lower end - but I still say you're making a mistake putting a $250 scope on an $800 rifle - general rule of thumb, currently, should be spend as much on the rings and scope combined, maybe even up to 10 or 15% more, as you do on the rifle.
