I took a break between undergrad and grad school. One of the biggest changes I noticed was that students used both of the arm straps on their backpacks instead of using just one, allowing the bag to hang down in a cool fashion.
Only the geekiest homeschoolers with no social awareness used both arm straps but that became the norm. I blame 90210 for raising awareness.

I may give millennials their fair amount of grief- but the one arm backpack was one thing I'm glad they fixed. I noticed the same thing (graduated HS in 1996 and started undergrad in 2003).
