I remember reading a few years back the games were also made harder to make more people buy them. Instead of just renting and playing a couple times and beating it you'd have to buy it because it took so long to beat.

Possibly, but I'm pretty sure they were hard before the rental market was relevant. I could be wrong though. Game design is certainly different now.
