I've seen other talented people do this, just to show that a good musician can make a crappy song sound good (or that the reason some songs are crappy is because of the original artist)...it can also be fun. Britney Spears seems to be a common target.

Glenn Hansard covered Britney Spears also. His version of Everytime is really good actually.
