it's really preachy and sanctimonious - maybe more annoying than "treme" in this regard. i could never make it past the first episode.
Didn't watch anything other than the first episode, yet you feel qualified to give an opinion on the entire series? Comical.
As for the series, I found it highly entertaining. It certainly has a liberal slant, but everyone knows that, so I don't understand how it can offend you.
The Daily Show has a liberal slant, Last Week Tonight has a liberal slant, and The Newsroom has a liberal slant. If you're comfortable with your own personal beliefs, it's a shame if you can't enjoy the shows for what they are - entertainment.

Newsroom was different for me. It didn't have the balance that West Wing had, it was just pummeling semi straw men week after week. Sorkin vs. a twisted image of the modern right all the time.
I can deal with a show that accurately portrays both sides and declares one superior. That's what West Wing did, for the most part. I can't deal with one where the premises are skewed and then piled high with sanctimonious arguments against something that doesn't exist in the form it was portrayed.
It's the same reason I appreciate but don't enjoy The Daily Show. Sometimes, Stewart is right on the money and very funny. Other times, he ties two arms behind the back of the argument he wants to destroy and then hits at it feebly while the audience cheers wildly as if he's the intellectual warrior of our time. In other words, it isn't reality. Thus far, I've found John Oliver to be much fairer in this regard.
I tried to like it. I wanted to like it. Part of the reason I ended up hating it is because it was a really good concept and we were deprived of seeing it come to fruition.

In his defense, the first episode pretty much nailed the tone and content of the entire series (with the exception of the final episode, which I actually enjoyed).
