If the copper was in your upper receiver area I am going to guess the brass was not prepped properly when the bullet was pressed into the case which can cause the case to scrap off pieces of copper jacket. Maybe the neck wasn't expended to the right size. Or the inside edge of the brass was not chamfered correctly. Was this hand loads or factory ammo?
