The read option isn't a play that is designed to take the ball out of the RBs hands. It's designed to let the QB READ the defender and then choose which OPTION will give the team the most yards on the play.
I don't think we read read option with JJ. We ran more traditional options. Which sorta give the QB more room to say "frick it I'm taking this"

The read option and the jet sweep, when properly executed in this offense, can be effective in spreading out the defense and toning down their aggressiveness. If you combine these concepts with a good short yardage and screen passing game (which we never could manage to do last year), it gives the defense a ton to think about pre-snap.
