For public schools, live in west BR, ascension Parrish, or denham
Even if going private, I would live across the river. Cost of living is WAY lower.
You can get a 3500 sq ft home in a great neighborhood, or on some land, for the cost of a simple townhouse in the garden district.
When your daughter gets older, the west side has more of a drinking culture while the east side is more druggie.

Lots of new houses and businesses out in Brusly last time I was there.....but you are getting off on Nicholson (toward LSU or downtown) or taking the old bridge to one of the plants, that commute can be frustrating.
Very low costs of living there and the people seem to be very nice.
Brusly is solid, but I would avoid public schools in Port Allen though.
