Macroscopic scale on camellias is probably insect mass. Ag center website is a good resource to identify visually what it is to know what to apply to treat it.
Camellias have their buds set by now so pruning will mean less bloom production this fall.

They do, I have done a serious pruning - I am willing to sacrifice some blooms to keep the plants healthy. If I must, I can prune again, I just don't want them to look to barren. They are my favorite part of my yard...you can take the girl out of Alabama...
