Because when you put 40k miles on a vehicle in a year and still need to haul stuff, you either own two vehicles or get something like this.
I have a 3/4 ton gasser and the fuel costs if I drove it every day even at today's prices are staggering. You're looking at a massive amount of money at 09 prices.

man I put 100 miles a day on my 2009 2500 gasser
got 250k on it now
when I bought the diesel/tranny upcharge was way too much though I shudder to think how gas money I've spent
I would downsize to a something like that if I knew it could drag my boat
