I was in the process of typing a diatribe about Hunt Jr's first rifle (7mm-08 btw) and my thoughts etc and read the age and thought . - 22 - can't go wrong.
Also consider investing in a lifetime hunt/fish License - very cheap at that age at least on Louisiana.
