Anyone ever been to this place for a quick getaway vacation?

Apparently, in the 60s this little mountain town was failing so they decided to turn it into a German mountain town to attract tourists. It worked.

New girlfriend loves the place and wants to go out there in August for a few days. She wants to go for a week, and I'm thinking long weekend. I don't know if I can take that much kitsch -- even with a healthy dose of wine -- for a week straight.

Anyone been to this place? Other than drink wine and German beer and shop, what is there to do?

It's a shithole filled with Darth clones. Ever since the tornado tore the place up, they have really gone out of their way to make it as trashy as possible.

Go to Highlands, NC instead.

Go for Oktoberfest. Haven't been since 2010, but it was a blast.

Used to go there back in the early 90s. It was a nice place to go back then.

Worth going to. Some of the local hotels will try to change your rate when you get there. Be careful.

It's cheesy and lame.

Get a cabin and skip the town.

I don't live very far. I used to go a lot when I was younger. I haven't been in years.

I've seen some shite in that town during Oktoberfest.

Have been several times. One day is really enough. There are no great restaurants or bars, and the general crowd is very boring.

Went hiking very near there, at some state park, and liked it.

Helen however, is pretty damned ´meh´. It´s missing carnival rides.

I only ever go for 2 reasons. Shooting the Hooch and Oktoberfest. Town's cheesy as shite, but if you roll out to Oktoberfest with a cool group and aren't afraid of cutting loose and dancing/drinking to polka, it can be a good time.

The traffic there is terrible because of everyone crossing the main road. And yes, it's cheesy and touristy.

Or mountain house isn't too far from there. We go to Helen occasionally but I wouldn't make it a point to go there for a vacation

Found this town by accident a couple years ago and thought it was pretty awesome. Just a neat place to spend a day and you can tube in the river if you're into that

I went and it's terrible. Tubing on the creek they call a river sucks as it's shallow.

The shops are like any other tourist trap just designed to look similar to the swiss alps.

There are far better places to go than Helen, GA imo.

ETA: OP, biker gangs like the place too.

Actually spent my bachelor weekend up there. Rented a cabin a few miles up one of the fire trails, took a shitload of alcohol and guns, came down a couple of times that day and night with the guys to hit on the sorority girls tubing by (actually some solid talent floating down that river if you catch it on a Saturday), almost got arrested, wound up with alcohol poisoning, still made the Sunday afternoon first pitch for the Braves the next day.

Not a bad place for a long weekend if you're into drinking and don't mind trashiness.

lol, that looks like a butchered version of germany. No where in germany will you see those bright colors. In Bavaria, everything is white or tan (though they do paint murals on the walls) and there are more colors in the Rhineland but they're more muted. And the actual architecture looks like a bastardization of the two.

That being said, my mother grew up in Germany so she likes it (i think). I've never been.

I went there once on a day trip and pretty sure I seen all they had to offer.

There is a pretty tall waterfall not far from there that's pretty cool.

Hiawassee, Blue Ridge, Dahlonega, Toccoa, Gainesville, Blairsville, Cleveland...all within striking distance from Helen if you are willing to drive a bit...

you have:

Unicoi State Park
Tallulah Gorge
Brasstown Bald...just to name a few...

depending on when you go, there are almost always festivals and fairs and such in Hiawassee...

the "creek" as our resident gator called it is actually the damned Chattahoochee RIVER...which flows southward to Atlanta and beyond...it's actually a good time tubing it in the summer if there has been plenty of rain...

if you want to fish for trout...plenty of places to do it....there is tons of shopping in Dahlonega if she is into that...

Helen is a nice place...it really depends on you...don't let these naysaying assholes talk you out of a decent getaway in N Ga....especially the fricking gator...
