It doesn't take a lot of money to live if you have no mortgage, no kids to support, and no car payments. The largest expense will be getting health insurance until Medicare kicks in. Most people will have a major medical expense before 60, and if you don't plan, that will break you. Also, if your parents don't have LTC insurance, don't expect much from them. They will probably spend most of their money the last two years of their life taking care of each other.
