I think we need a John Waters now more than ever. We live in a repressed era in which everything is polished to a sheen to make it more normal. Waters wasn't just offensive, he was gleefully offensive. His films were amateurish fun, and really felt like kids getting away with a prank while the parents weren't looking.
Could Pink Flamingos get made and/or distributed today? Also, Cry-Baby is an underrated classic.
I love Lynch, too, but we don't need another dour, dark filmmaker exploring humanity's underbelly. We need joyful, happy filmmakers reveling in the underbelly.
