We are renting one with a skipper and cook for 10 days in the BVI next July. As you stated, it's more affordable than I thought it would be but if you get a boat with a full crew it gets $$$$$ in a hurry.
I'd recommend somewhere like the BVI as there are many islands you can visit in a short amount of time.
