He's right. Besides Loki and Winter Soldier, MCU villains are nothing but an afterthought.

I wouldn't say afterthought, but "safe" is probably the best word. Marvel doesn't make the offensive to taste, the comic books, or to heroes. They put them in place to keep stories moving along and nothing else. It does suck, but since they usually get good actors to play them, there's always that.

He does focus on specifics like Iron Monger, while not a great villain, Stane actually was. The way he pushed Tony aside, kept control, etc. And Bridges' performance certainly helped.

The Red Skull just didn't get enough screen time, and wasn't really able to show his true villainous self. But that just goes to abbreviated run times.

For Martin, this trend won't really change much. Magic is going to be all over Strange. Civil War won't bring anyone new to the table on the Villain side but Zemo (which can be fantastic, we'll see) who is just another spy/soldier type.

I do think Marvel was planning to get everyone comfortable with the idea of super heroes and the universe, before getting creative. Captain Marvel has a good rogue's gallery from space, the Inhumans require new creativity in both heroes and villains, and Dr. Strange MIGHT go some different places if it gets sequels.

Also, we should probably see some cool stuff in Thor: Ragnorak and GotG2 methinks.

Wish they would do something with Sub Mariner. He was a villain because of what happened to his people. Made him look not like a bad guy but one who opposed the good guys because he was driven by what he had to do. Wish they would use him but they'd screw it up.
