Use flea and tick shampoo on pets.
But flea and tick medicine for pets.
Bomb the shite out of your house.

This.
I give my dog NexGard chewables (once a month) and she never gets the first flea or tick. She stayed for a week at my sister's place while the Mrs and I were on vacation, my sister's dogs are outside dogs and have fleas (she refuses to believe her homeopathic bullshite doesn't work). My dog didn't have a single flea on her even after a week of being around those dogs.
Giving them something to stop the fleas is the first part. After the chewable, bathe them (the fleas on them will leave or die once the meds take effect, but there's no reason to not go ahead and kill them now).
Once this is done comes the hard part, getting them the frick out of your house and yard. The easiest and most effective method I've found is to bomb the shite out of your house and spray the hell out of your yard (especially spots where your dog likes to stay).
You'll notice an almost immediate difference with your dog (via their not scratching or nibbling so much) and a difference in your house and yard within a day or so.
