I've chosen the 40 because it packs more punch than the 9mm. I don't currently own a handgun. I've asked around as to whether I should get the 9mm or 40. Everyone suggests getting the 40 because there's no doubt it'll stop someone in their tracks.

Is there a particular reason you are choosing 40? 9mm, 40, and 45 all pretty much do the same thing so I usually suggest 9mm first since it's cheapest to shoot and holds the most ammo. But if you already own a 40 I can understand keeping ammo consistent.

Best advice so far.

Get a 9mm. Waste your money on a .40 if all your friends are cops, all your friends are ghetto thugs, or if you need something to match the manliness of your chromed truck nuts.

There's a damn good reason the FBI is transitioning to 9mm.

Like others mentioned, no one that you might possibly shoot will ever notice the difference between a .40 and 9mm. Yes, the .40 does pack more punch, but it is negligible. 9mm is cheaper to shoot, easier on your gun and with the right bullets will do just as good of a job as a 40.

As Shexter and Buck both said, this is true, but to such a small degree that there is barely a difference.

Think of it this way: 9mm is light and fast, 45 is heavy and slow, and 40 splits the difference. But 9mm has two other big advantages:

1. Larger magazine (17 vs 15 for most full sized guns)

2. Quicker follow-up shots (you have a greater chance of connecting with your target more than once)

And if you plan on carrying something smaller than a full sized gun, it makes even more sense to go with 9mm. I carry an M&P9c or a Kahr CM9 depending on my attire. The 9c holds 12 and the CM9 holds 6. You'll see a 1 or 2 round reduction of those in 40. Does 1 or 2 shots matter that much? If that's all I have on me you bet your arse it does. You might as well stack the cards in your favor.

I couldn't be happier with my .40 caliber (Glock 27) that I purchased in the late 90s, BUT if I could have a do-over I would own a 9mm handgun (loaded with modern hollow-points) instead because of magazine capacity (primary reason) and slightly less expensive ammo (secondary).

Ammunition design has come a LONG way in recent years. Please check out the Pistol Ammunition section at the Best Choices for Self Defense Ammo page hosted by ar15.com. A very telling quote from there is: "Properly designed hollow-point ammunition - regardless of caliber - all perform very close to each other when you take expanded diameter and penetration depth into account"
