While GotG was a fairly unknown property, it also opened in early August with far less serious competition for the family market Ant-Man was targeting. Ant-Man was also in about 200 less screens and cost $40 million less.
I think the better comparison might actually be with Captain America: The First Avenger due to it being released at essentially the same time of the year in July.
