its somewhere inbetween. it gets really hot and cooks well, but the grates take alot more time to keep clean and I have read of durability issues. the cooking surface on mine gets to 750 degrees, so its great for steaks.
They cook great. I've got a Charbroil "Commercial" infrared on my back patio. First year or two I loved mine. Even talked my pops into buying one. Then about 3 years in it started to fall apart. Now (probably 6 years old) the grates are gone, the burners are shot and the whole back end has disintegrated. This thing lives under a roof and has never seen rain or elements. And the one I talked my dad in to getting is doing the same thing. They just don't last. They tout them as stainless, but only thing Stainless is the lid. The other components are some tin foil Chinese alloy. I would spend a little more and get a Weber. Or a little less and get an el cheapo gas grill. They'll make it for a few years, which is about what the Char Broil will do....
