Every man of the house should check that your house is secure before your family goes to bed. I make sure all doors are locked, garage closed, truck locked, lights are off inside, and porch lights on. My neighborhood is very safe, but you can't make the mistake of thinking its too safe. There are criminals everywhere and will go into the good, safe neighborhoods. It sucks this happened to you. I hope you recover your vehicle, and prosecute/execute those involved.

As the man of my house, I work as hard as horse frick, so I sometimes tend to pass out while the Mrs is watching Conan. The least she can do is double check the garage door. Hard arse.
