You don't have to play every team. The only USA sport that I think does play every team is NBA.
With the addition of new teams, it will obviously improve viewership. I'm sure MLS will get a huge boost in ratings just for bringing in the Atlanta market. Do that for another 8 big markets and you'll see the MLS footprint really start expanding.

NHL does as well to keep a competitive balance,
NFL clearly can't bc people would die
Baseball could if it wanted to and gets pretty close now with inter league play.
