Most first divisions in the World are not in the United states. As long as the TV revenue/gate can be supported I dont think they will stop for a while. Plenty of room to grow into bigger and better national TV and media contracts and those are maximized through having franchises in good media markets. This isnt Europe no matter how many folks want it to be or try to compare the situations. I dont ever think there will be relegation between and two or more divisions. Large population with a high percentage of disposable income per captia.
All good points but travel will be a huge factor and already is in the MLS and to many teams will make the quality worse.
But if we do push it to the max a two division system is a must. Make every match count for those at the bottom.

If you are trying to schedule like the European 1st divisions. Again, this thing isnt going to end up mirroring first divisions in Europe.
Think about this for a second
Population of the 5 countries that make up the "Big 5" First divisions in Europe; Germany,England+Wales,France,Italy and Spain: 307 Million.
Population of the untied States: 322 Million.
The US also has the more prominent media markets for growth, higher discretionary income per capita etc.
I love the structure of the European First divisions but I am a realist in that the MLS will be different because the US is different.
What is a feasible way to schedule a 32 team soccer league for 8 months with every team having to play each other at least once. You are looking at damn near 50 matches a year with long road trips. Its just not sustainable for the sport.

Since the playoffs are more important than finishing top of the table (something unique to us), Playing your division home and away each year and the other divisions once is a great idea.
Or you could go the old AL and NL system the MLB had where the two only met in the playoffs
