No more than 32

I think that number is probably close to the mark. In order for the MLS to compete with the other professional leagues in the U.S. it has to saturate some/same markets as the other pro sports with local franchises and their product. Cant keep dropping teams in markets that are "soccer rich" but overall sports/media market poor.

NFL: 32
MLB: 30
NBA: 30
NHL: 30
MLS: 20

I get and understand the love of the Euro relegation/promotion system but for the league and sport to thrive and prosper here it will have to adapt to our sporting culture and business environment. The MLS HAS to compete with four established major sports leagues for revenue. That just isnt the case anywhere else in the world.

Difference is those leagues are the best in the world and have the best players playing in them from all over the world and can use what ever model they see fit.

The MLS does not have that luxury and a league with the amount of teams as those leagues would make the quality worse. Unless there is a second division where people realize it won't be as good but it makes every match worth it.
