My mom just recently heard stuff like this about her childhood. One of her older brothers told her about how poor the family was when she was growing up. She just realized the reason why she always made her sandwiches so thin for her kids (me included) was because her family couldn't afford a lot of lunch meat or peanut butter, so her mother just put the same # of slices on, but the slices were thinner.

My mom has always hated thick sandwiches and always only put like 2-3 pieces of see-through thin turkey on a sandwich
