It was because of who they were playing, not because of anything on Minnesota's side of it. It wouldn't matter if Minnesota was the only FBS program in the state or if there were four others - nobody cares about the Gophers.

You are wrong. People in Minnesota do care about the gophers. They have one of the newest and nicest stadiums in college football. I am not a big gopher fan but I will concede that they are followed heavily in Minnesota albeit it gets displayed more when they are winning.
