That is the perfect analogy.
I thought season 1 was fantastic. As good as any season of any show ever. Ziggy definitely made season 2 a chore to get through. Also it has the whole, getting the band back together feel to it that's a bit cliché. Season 3 was very good and got me back in. I liked season 4 as well. Season 5 felt like season 2 of Heroes to me, an obvious and painful decline in story.
If I was ranking the sesons: 1..3,4..2......5. As a whole, a great series, top 5 definitely. But if I had to pick a series to rewatch, I would pick Breaking Bad, The Sopranos, and Game of Thrones before The Wire.

I agree with you on season 1. I thought it was amazing. It's really tough for me to pick between seasons 1 and 3. I thought both were absolutely incredible.
