ESPN simply can't afford to outbid every network for every major sporting event .. they budget their money for what is important and what makes them money .. They dropped a shite ton on the College Football Playoff contract and are socking away bucks to bid on the Super Bowl, next go around .. They are also supposedly shooting to get into the March Madness hunt .. They simply can't have everything and we have to deal with it ..

ESPN wanted 2022, but FIFA basically awarded it to FOX before it even came up for a bid. This unsurprisingly happened around the same time that they announced it was going to be a Winter world cup
