You should definitely move to NC man. I'm in VA and am about 1.5 hours away from skiing, whitewater rafting and mountain biking and about 3 hours away from the beach. You'd be relatively close to both as well. NC has some quality beaches.

That's what interests me so much is the access to the mountains. Never lived so close to the mountains. I feel our quality of life would be better there too with the outdoor activity options. Cost of living in Winston(as the locals say) is really affordable too.
