Lafayette Sheriff's Race Getting Hot

looks like some "stolen valor" esque vets in Lafayette are upset with one of the candidate for sheriff.
KLFY Article
Garber served in a civilian role for the USAF in Iraq, but engaged in combat and was awarded a Bronze Star. apparently one of his law partner's websites (which I'm not sure he had control over) stated that both Garber and the partner were veterans (which has since been corrected). I believe that the Garber campaign material clearly states that he was in a civilian role in Iraq.
this is the biggest non-issue, especially for a race for Sheriff, that i may have ever seen from a metro area around here
next you're going to hear that Garber once said ULL instead of UL or some shite. that's the level of attack this should be

Garber is pictured in campaign material dressed in military gear with a gun; his Bronze Star medal also is shown. To make it worse, local veterans said, Garber stood up at a banquet recently when military veterans were recognized.
“He slapped the face of every veteran in Lafayette by portraying himself as a veteran,” said Daniel J. Bentley, commander of American Legion Post 69 of Lafayette. “He is not a veteran.”
Garber told The Daily Advertiser , “I have never, ever claimed to be a military veteran.”

“He said he was in Iraq with the Air Force,” said Deron Santiny of Lafayette, a member of the Wounded Warrior Project, past commander of the Military Order of the Purple Heart chapter in Lafayette and a Southwest Louisiana Veterans Coalition board member. “He’s not saying he was a civilian contractor or whatever his capacity was.
“He’s claiming to be with the Air Force in Iraq and anyone who doesn’t know any better is automatically going to assume he’s a veteran,” Santiny said.
Bentley said Garber is walking a very fine line.
“He was over there. He took the same oath, but he didn’t sign the same paper.” He did not serve in a branch of the military and does not have a DD-214, a form every veteran receives upon discharge, he said.

Sounds close enough to me.

Is he being dishonest in this issue? If so then I would say it is a issue because I would want my sheriff to be honest more than anything.

From the little bit that I've read on this race, it appears to be a classic douche or turd sandwich decision.

Seems like a non-issue. Politicians throwing mud at the other side, especially if his campaign materials don't state that he's a veteran.

If he was in Iraq, and awarded a bronze star, even as a contractor, I don't see the issue.
Sounds like typical election year BS.
