I think it is strange how it is down here, in that it seems to me (and I've lived in Louisiana all my life) that some of the people that profess bigotry in groups can be generous, kind and giving to people of other races and sexual orientation on an individual basis, believe me, Ive seen it and continue to see it. It strikes me as an odd phenomenon, but I see it happen all the time. Now, there are people that publicly profess views that most would call bigoted or narrow-minded that treat individuals poorly as well, but I argue that most of these folks are guilty of treating all other humans poorly, often time members of their own families, regardless of race, nationality, religion or sexual orientation.
It's not odd at all when you realize that bigotry exists on a spectrum.
It's not either you're David Duke or you're a patron saint. Most of us are bigoted about something. Some are overtly bigoted. In others bigotry exists on a more insidious level. Also what people are bigoted and how ardent they are about their beliefs about changes from region to region.

Exactly. I've always said that people should be less worried about flag waving racists that spew the n-word every two seconds because those people almost never have any power to exert any real oppression over minorities. It's the bigots who play it close to the vest and whisper disparagingly about "the blacks" over mimosas at the country club... that's where the REAL problem is. And that exists all over the place, not just the south. You bet your arse.
