I think it is strange how it is down here, in that it seems to me (and I've lived in Louisiana all my life) that some of the people that profess bigotry in groups can be generous, kind and giving to people of other races and sexual orientation on an individual basis, believe me, Ive seen it and continue to see it. It strikes me as an odd phenomenon, but I see it happen all the time. Now, there are people that publicly profess views that most would call bigoted or narrow-minded that treat individuals poorly as well, but I argue that most of these folks are guilty of treating all other humans poorly, often time members of their own families, regardless of race, nationality, religion or sexual orientation.

My point is that there seems to be a great deal of generosity and altruism that exists down here, but there is something of a pack mentality as well, especially when it comes to people that are different. And believe me, I'm not making an apology for it, that's just how I see it.

I've never heard the N word more than in Chicago or Boston.

Now those are some good ole fashion racists.

It's not odd at all when you realize that bigotry exists on a spectrum.

It's not either you're David Duke or you're a patron saint. Most of us are bigoted about something. Some are overtly bigoted. In others bigotry exists on a more insidious level. Also what people are bigoted and how ardent they are about their beliefs about changes from region to region.
