Do you have the sub connected speaker level (using speaker wire) or line level (using a single cable with RCA connectors)?
If you are hooked up using line level make sure the RCA cable is plugged in to the left "L" input on the sub. Make sure the other end of the cable is plugged in to the proper subwoofer out location on the receiver.
What receiver are you using? My inclination is that you either have a bad cable or are connected improperly.

Im using the single cable. I have a red white input in the sub as well as a single unfilttered input which is what i thought i use
