Here is a webpage on fish tagging with a series of photos of some different tags. There are many different methods and styles of tagging fish, but these are three common tag types.
Notice the relative size of the tags. Although the highly visible (brightly colored) portion of the tags are approximately the same length, the overall size of the tags differ to due the mechanism that actually secures the tag to the fish.

I'm not worried about that or the trout that takes one for the team. Again, that must suck having to carry that size tag for such a small fish, is all I'm saying.
