Happens all the time. The rarity is a Mingo and Montgomery meeting for the first time and deciding they want to play together. Speedy knows what's up, as do some (many?) of these kids. He's still an Aggie so I'm not going to give him too much credit though.
I don't think this happened. They visited at different times and played in different AA games.

As much as I hate his decision, despise his uncle, want his team to fail as miserably and embarrassingly as possible, and hate to admit it... it didn't take long for Speedy himself to validate his decision. AnM is a great fit for him.
Ellis has the bad uncle, not Speedy.

The story I read was that they met for the first time on a visit to LSU (a restaurant or something??), talked a little bit, and that sealed it for both of them. I'll see if I can find that.

ETA: not exactly what I was looking for; maybe it was a combination of this article and an interview (where one of the two said something about after meeting they decided to play together). My memory is indeed fuzzy. And it was a visit to Michigan, not LSU. Go figure. Guess is an example of why not to necessarily worry about visits to other schools.

quote:

BATON ROUGE, La. -- LSU defensive ends Sam Montgomery and Barkevious Mingo met nearly five years ago on a recruiting trip to Michigan. At a club on their final night in Ann Arbor, Mingo went to a back VIP area and dozed off on a couch. Worried, Montgomery sat next to Mingo.

"His legs were all out there and a girl tripped over his legs and fell into my lap," Montgomery said. "I looked at him, and he looked at me, and he smiled and went back to sleep. That's how we met."
