I used to fly. Normally in the terminal area, takeoff, approach and landing, full call signs are used to avoid these types of events. In cruise it really isn't a big deal.

I've gone upfront on my family's plane (yea, subtle brag) while cruising. I swear, sometimes I think it's a game of "who can talk the fastest".
