I can agree with it if it is recreational, though as a business owner I wouldn't fire someone over that, but medical is insanity. I guess people can be fired for taking Lexapro or bi-polar medicine too?

This.
Employers right to ban recreational use of substances. They can ban alcohol if they wanted.
However, if a doctor prescribes Marijuana, I think its fricked up they can get fired for that if used entirely off-duty.
I can get fired for taking a bunch of pain killers I'm not prescribed to and failing a drug test, but if I have migraines and they are prescribed I am completely protected by law.

That should certainly be allowed.

Employers can fire you for taking prescription pain medication as well. No difference really.

My friend does IT contract work for a company who drug screens employees but removed THC from the panel last year.

Pot still isn't legal in the eyes of the federal government and isn't an FDA approved drug. And in a state like Colorado, getting a 'script for medicinal marijuana is a total joke.
Now, should pot be legal under federal law? Yea, I don't see why not. But employers have the right to name the conditions of employment. Hell, Anheuser-Busch employees can get fired if they are caught drinking a competitor's product in a bar where AB products are readily available.
