If he's not a wight or dead, then you've got to think there's one hell of reason why he never returned to the wall. He's an honorable and stubborn as Jon and Ned
All the Dorne, or Mereen theories lose their sense when you take this into account
However if he met up with someone that recruited him to help in the war against the WWs, that's something I could see him sticking around for instead of returning to castle black
I mean if we can believe that The Lord of the light can revive people, why couldn't some force north of the wall (old gods) do the same?

Looks like Elaria might free the Sand Sloots and attack Jaime, et al. That opening reference is pretty ominous.
