I get that there are no landmarks in the ocean but you do have this thing is the sky called a sun.

The sun rises in one direction and sets in the other.

Start paddling in the direction that the place you left would be according to what way the sun moves.

it can get pretty disorienting out in blue water, even in broad daylight, but in a kayak at night that kid had no clue which way was up
