We were diving with tanks, only went down 1 atmosphere so about 35 to 40 feet. Most places will offer an intro or beginner dive for people who aren't certified. You will have to sit through a 30 minute or so course then do your test in the water. Once you check good on that and the instructor knows you aren't going to flip out once you get under, you get to dive. They can't take you deep though, you likely won't go past 1 atmosphere.
