Anybody ever stay in Tulum at a private house or anything? I see them on the sites, but I haven't figured out how to get there without having to rent a Jeep and drive like three hours from the airport to get there. Also, I don't want to get shaken down by the MX Policias or grabbed by bandits, killed & then raped.

My wife and I went to Tulum summer of 2012. We split our time between Azulik and a second resort (who's name escapes me right now). WARNING: When we went to Tulum, except for a handful of resorts, the resorts were off the power grid. The resorts that are off the power grid (like Azulik) have only a small amount of electricity available (ceiling fan, limited lighting, some hot water, but no a/d or hair dryers), usually generated by solar power. The second resort we stayed at had full electricity available, including a/c. There's a number of internet forums just for Tulum; they are chock full of info. My wife didn't enjoy the "rustic" part of our vacation as much as I did. We flew into Cancun, rented a car and drove to Tulum (two hour drive). We didn't killed or raped , but looking back on it now, I'm not sure I'd do it that way again.
