2. Only lazy people get welfare: A common retort from those who like to demonize those who receive public assistance is “if you just worked harder, you wouldn’t need welfare! Stop being lazy and get to work!” Almost $104 million dollars worth of food stamps were used at military commissaries in 2013. These are some of the hardest working people in the United States, and they still need food stamps to get by. In addition, nearly 1 million veterans receive food stamps as well. While there are certainly some who spend a lifetime on public assistance, they are the exception, not the rule – and honestly, I can’t see that as being a happy way to live.

Myth #3: SNAP is rife with fraud and abuse.

FACT: “SNAP has one of the most rigorous quality control systems of any public benefit program,” according to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities. SNAP fraud has actually been cut by three-quarters over the past 15 years, and the program’s error rate is at an all-time low of less than 3 percent. The introduction of EBT (Electronic Benefit Transfer) cards has dramatically reduced consumer fraud. According to the USDA, the small amount of fraud that continues is usually on the part of retailers, not consumers.

If people saw what you have to do to get food stamps, it would make them appreciate the program more.

I've got no problem with food stamps. My main issues it the quality of food these programs provide. It should be the basics. Vegetables, fruits and a cheap meat. They shouldn't be getting soft drinks, candy and lobster on my dime.

You would rather have them buy rib-eye steaks and organic fruits and vegetables than cheap carb trash that will end their miserable lives sooner? I say we enable chain smokers to purchase their Camels with EBT cards so they die out faster.

I agree with this, but it could have been worded better. If folks on food stamps had specialized stores that, say, were co-opped with farmers, that would be fantastic. They could get nutritious food items that would sustain their family and improve their health. Further, it could help farmers. Killing multiple birds with one stone.

Say that to all the folks here that happen to come across that one woman who has an iPhone and follow her to her Camaro in the parking lot.

The OT and Political Board have worn this story out that it has facebook post written all over it.

Fact: More people using food stamps now more than ever.

Fact: I'd get three jobs before going on food stamps.

Dependence = Poverty...
