Wife and I did this trip 5 or 6 years ago with 5 other couples. We all left our kids home and I would recommend doing so as it will change the trip.
We went through a charter company and booked a 12 person cat. One week before we went the boat had to go in for repairs and our agent scrambled to get other boats. She ended up getting two boats to sub in at last minute. One was a 50 foot cat (swish) and one was a 72 foot monohull (sublime) We ended up with three couples on each boat but we stuck together and would either tie up with each other or would get mooring balls close to each other and just swim to each others boats. It ended up working out great this way. Gave us a little more space, only downside was that we weren't all together the whole time.
It was without a doubt the best vacation we have ever been on. Hit soggy dollar,Willy T's, did scuba, snorkel, several islands. Boat was all inclusive. Have tried to get the crew back together but it has been hard with kids schedules etc.

Thanks everyone for the good info. I'm thinking we charter a day trip in San Diego or Newport Beach and take a trial sail to see how everyone likes it. Most of these folks have never been on a sailboat. Can anyone recommend a charter sailboat group in southern California?
Thanks again, this is dream trip for me, I haven't sailed in ages. I just don't want it to end up being a catastrophe because of poor planning on my part.
