This is quite a broad question.

I would get a single stack 9mm. You're more likely to have it on you rather than leave it at home when you really need it. Some examples:

S&W M&P Shield
Springfield XDs
Glock 43
Walther PPS
Kahr CM9
Sig 938

... just to name a few.

If you don't think you can carry inside your waistband given your current daily attire, I would go with a pocket-carried 380, in a holster that protects the trigger of course. Some more examples:

Kahr CW380
Sig P238
Glock 42
Ruger LCP

Best of luck. The amount of options can get pretty overwhelming so go with your gut when you find the right one.
