Youre fooling yourself if you believe that, or you are not old enough to remember the early days of ESPN.

Simmons basically got ESPN in to podcasting, started the 30 for 30 series, and built Grantland. Those other guys were anchors. It is a bit easier to replace an anchor.

Simmons was surely an innovator, but he bit the had that fed him one too many times.

also, in his latest podcast on dan patrick, he called out the NFL and goodell again.

It was either that or that fact that his innovative style costed too much money and wasn't turning enough revenue. I mean Grantland is great and all, but the casual fan ain't got time for dat.

This hypothetical quote is the bottom line.

Wow...that 30 for 30 is a great series and Grantland has some great sports journalism. I think I'll tune in to ESPN'S football coverage now!

Said no one ever.

If you're looking at from a "prestige" angle then maybe you're right though 30 for 30 will probably run just fine.

But from a revenue angle, he's very replaceable. And that's all ESPN cares about.

Two largely irrelevant pieces of the ESPN behemoth. In fact, I'd be shocked if they weren't losing money on both.
