I can't find one situation where leaving the car on directly caused an explosion. Am I wrong?

Air conditioning/heater stays on in extreme weather months.

Nothing is going to happen with modern cars. Nothing.
FWIW, I do it when its super hot or super cold outside. When its 0 degrees and ice covering your car, you'd want the heat to remain on too.

Keeping yourself and the inside of the vehicle cool in summer and warm in winter.

And what would that be?

There is no downside. If this were a real problem we'd be having gas station explosions every day in every city in the US.

Could you really not think of any upside?

I always keep it running while fueling. Upside - keep radio on with my spots talk rolling and the door open so I can hear it while I pump.
