The date is significant because that's the last year they minted coins (the teacher mentioned this). In other words, that's around the time the shite hit the fan so hard that humanity itself went down the shitter. Think how far we would have to fall as a country for coins to never be printed again, then apply that to the entire world (as far as we know).

I must've missed that she stated it was the last year they minted coins. I guess I really need to go back and rewatch the episode.
