Did learning about the War of Roses spoil ASOIAF? ***theoretical spoilers?***

So basically most of us get a passing reference if anything to England's War of the Roses during that one semester of World History in Junior year of high school. It's a complex power struggle that shapes England between two powerful families and then an invading power from across the sea comes and messes shite up. Since it quickly vanishes from our minds, I'm willing to bet a good amount of GoT fans where unaware of the historical background to Mr. Martin's tale.
Doing a little research into the matter will you will find your self quickly finding parallels, not just to families and events, but specific people, places and plot points. From Hadrian's Wall, the Yorks and Lancasters, invading progressive Frenchies, wild Scotts from the north.... oh and the symbol of Wales is a dragon so do with that what you will. The point is, it's an historical event.... which had a result, people dies, people won and one of the reasons Britain is like four confusing countries in one is what we're left with.
While this is nothing new, (in fact for British fans this was probably like us reading a book about the Civil War with name changes) this video animating it all out is quite new and enjoyable. If you consider.... history.... a spoiler, then you've been warned.

I still don't get how this inspired GOT? I mean I could see Tyrion as the Danny Devito character, but is Michael Douglas Jamie Lannister or Ned Stark? Is Kathleen Turner Cersei Lannister or Danarys?

the it's basically a mythological retelling. And to be honest... a mythological retelling of the American Civil War would be kickass.

This is not a new revelation. But it is definitely not a full on retelling of the War of the Roses. It was just one of GRRM's main inspirations for the books (along with other English fantasy literature like the Arthurian legends).

War of the Roses was a complex war between two dynastic families. I don't really see that many direct parallels. There are more than two families in GoT and there hasnt been all the battles. There's no real parallel to the Nights Watch, dragons, the wall, the winter zombie things, the slavery issue beyond what we imagine.
But War of the Roses ended with a battle and a triumphant king who had some familial ties to both families, so I don't even know who that would be in GoT.

"The White Queen" was a good Series on at least part of the story. Agree that GOT is only very loosely inspired by War of the Roses, it's more about the general idea of Houses and a political and actual battle for the throne amongst multiple claimants. The Wall is based on Hadrians Wall but Hadrians is tiny by comparison.

As others have said, the War of the Roses are only one of the inspirations. There are several others - The Red Wedding was inspired by the Black Dinner which was between Scottish factions and was a decade and a half before he War of the Roses. Likewise the Scottish Douglases had "Black Douglases" and "Red Douglases" which is kind of reminiscent of the Targaryans and Blackfyres.
And a whole lot of Got is just GRRM's creation from his own imagination.

No. He ripped off a lot of different stories from history, similarly to how JK Rowling ripped off European folklore for Harry Potter.

I get the feeling Rowling didn't rip off European folklore as much as just make a world where all of it was just true.

Yeah it'd have to be very loosely. History is full of factions fighting for power. Hadrians wall would be the King Arthur reference, I guess. I dunno. It had nothing to do with war of the roses.

Who would be Henry VII? I haven't read the books or done any reading on this theory other than this thread.
