Not sure how coffee spilled on your lap gets to your intestine.
The interesting thing is the numbers. If he legit had to have a portion of his intestine removed, the surgical bills alone would exceed $50K. This smells of a judge/jury threshold of $50K, like Louisiana, where all bullshite cases are alleged to be under that amount so they can get a bench trial and avoid a jury giving them zero.
Tried one of these in Natchitoches Parish, where plaintiff dropped cup handed to her thru drive thru window. 1 month treatment for burns, small amount discoloration on upper thigh and lower abdomen. Judge awards $49,900. Not a cop though.

Did y'all stipulate to below 50k or did the Plaintiff do it on his/her own initiative?

The free items that officers get are usually just free coffee and fountain drinks at convience stores, otherwise known as stop and robs.
Our local Starbucks never gives free coffee to officers nor do they give a discount.
The department I retired from we were allowed to accept discounts, we were not allowed to ask for them. That was a big no no.
I doubt I would ever sue for spilling hot coffee on myself. That would seem to be my fault. Now if a Starbucks worker threw coffee on me then I would sue.
