good lord...trees you dumb sumbitch.
back during the days of western expansion, expansion/migration stopped in the plains because there were no trees to build dwellings/houses, fuel for fires, etc. and current geographical population centers reflect historical settlements, which in the grand scheme of things are that far removed in time.
